Water Softener Systems

Home water softeners, also called ion exchange units, are appliances that remove calcium, magnesium, and other minerals from drinking water. Resin beads inside the softener trap the calcium and magnesium and exchange them for sodium or potassium.

When the Cation Resin bead is fully loaded with sodium. Evidently it will readily give off the sodium (Na+1) with one positive charge in exchange for calcium (Ca+2) with two positive charges.

The exchange process is about the ability of the resin bead to take on one ion while giving up another.

When all of the exchange sites are loaded with calcium or magnesium. The resin beads are subjected to a high amount of salt (brine).
