Description

A PVC Socket female threaded 3/8″ with British Standard Pipe (BSP) female threads is a fitting with internal screw threads designed to connect to other externally (male) threaded components. These fittings are primarily used in regions that follow the BSP standard, such as the UK, Europe, Australia, and parts of Asia and Africa.

Product types

A BSP female threaded PVC socket can be manufactured with two different connection types on the other end.

Fully threaded sockets

These Socket female threaded 3/8″ have female BSP threads on both ends and are used to join two male BSP threaded pipe sections or fittings.

Key features and applications

  • Durability: Manufactured from unplasticised polyvinyl chloride (uPVC), these fittings are highly resistant to corrosion, chemicals, and rust.
  • Leak-proof connection: When used with an appropriate sealant, BSP threaded connections create a secure and reliable seal, especially with BSP Parallel Pipe (BSPP) threads that use an O-ring or gasket.
  • Low maintenance: Because they are not susceptible to corrosion, PVC fittings require minimal upkeep.
  • Versatility: The availability of different connection types (threaded or solvent weld) makes these fittings adaptable for various system designs.
  • High-pressure resistance: Many PVC-U fittings, such as the H2O Warehouse product, are rated for high-pressure systems, like PN16.

Applications

  • Plumbing: For both residential and commercial projects, to ensure secure pipe connections in potable water and drainage systems.
  • Irrigation: Commonly used in agricultural and domestic irrigation setups for efficient water distribution.
  • Industrial use: Ideal for industrial fluid systems and chemical processing due to their resistance to corrosive fluids.
  • Water treatment: Used in swimming pools and water treatment plants, where they must withstand chlorine and filtration setups.

Important considerations

  • NPT vs. BSP threads: Do not mix British Standard Pipe (BSP) and National Pipe Thread (NPT) fittings, as they are not compatible. BSP threads have a 55° thread angle, while NPT threads have a 60° angle. Using an incompatible fitting will not create a proper seal and can lead to leaks or system failures.
  • Tapered vs. parallel threads: Be aware that BSP fittings come in two types: Tapered (BSPT) and Parallel (BSPP).
  • BSPP (Parallel) threads: Require a gasket, O-ring, or other bonded seal to create a watertight connection.
  • BSPT (Tapered) threads: Tapered threads wedge together to create a secure seal, often with the help of a thread sealant.
  • Temperature limits: PVC has a maximum operating temperature of around 60°C (140°F). Exposing it to higher temperatures can cause the material to soften or deform, compromising the system’s integrity.
  • Dry fit first: Before applying any sealant, test the fit of the pipes and fittings to ensure they screw together properly.
  • Use thread sealant: Wrap PTFE tape clockwise around the male threads a few times before tightening the fitting. This will help create a leak-proof seal and prevent the joint from seizing.
  • Avoid over-tightening: Tighten the fitting until it is snug, but avoid using excessive force, as this can crack the plastic.
  • PVC socket female threaded: This fitting has female BSP threads on both ends, allowing two male-threaded components to be joined.
