The Blue Lagoon Copper ionizer UV-C 40W is a water purification system for swimming pools that combines ultraviolet (UV-C) radiation with copper electrolysis to significantly reduce or eliminate the need for chlorine.

Features and Operation

• Dual Disinfection: The system uses a two-pronged approach:
  • UV-C Radiation: The 40W UV-C lamp neutralizes bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms by disrupting their ability to multiply. A 316L stainless steel housing interior reflects the UV-C rays, increasing the effective output by up to 35%.
  • Copper Ionization: Electrically charged copper ions (Cu2+) are released into the water, forming compounds with the cell walls of negatively charged microorganisms, which prevents them from taking in nutrients and kills them off.
• Reduced Chemical Use: This combination allows for a significant reduction (up to 100% in some cases) in chlorine concentration, addressing issues like chlorine smell, skin irritation, and red eyes. A low copper concentration of 0.7 ppm (parts per million) is sufficient for effective disinfection.
• Maintenance and Monitoring: We designed the product for easy installation and maintenance. Users need to manually test the water every two weeks with supplied test strips to ensure correct copper levels. The lamp and copper unit have a lifespan of approximately 1-2 swimming seasons (around 9,000 hours of operation) and you should replace them when the device indicates.

Considerations

• Water Chemistry: You must still maintain proper pH balance (7.0-7.6) and alkalinity levels, as with any pool system.
• Saltwater Use: Note that this particular unit is generally not recommended for saltwater applications due to potential toxic chemical reactions between the copper and salt. Separate “Duplex” models designed for salt water are available from the manufacturer.
• Grounding: The device requires correct grounding for safe operation.
